After a long day at work, I opened the 2010 Divining Rod Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands to pair with my pasta and shrimp. It was room temperature but I opened it anyway to have a glass while I was getting dinner together. I wasn’t expecting a lot, but I got a lot! I was surprised and impressed at how delicious it was and looked forward to tasting it with dinner after it had some chill time in the refrigerator. It was the perfect accompaniment with dinner–refreshing, citrusy, nice body, not too heavy but enough to stand up to the butter and garlic and shrimp.
With a fresh, clean, bright, nose, the 2010 Divining Rod Chardonnay certainly put a spell on me from beginning to end, making me very happy!
The next day, I tasted the 2010 Chardonnay again with Que Syrah Sue, Ima Zinner, Annie AnyDay and Marshall $$Bags. I was still quite impressed. Ima Zinner thought was a little wimpy but still enjoyable; I’m guessing she likes some oak with her wine and this one is unoaked.
We agreed that it wasn’t like a classic California chardonnay (again attribute that to being unoaked), but certainly not disappointing, and to me, preferable. As it warmed up, we liked it even better–we could taste all of the finer characteristics that were tamed down by the chill–lots of tropical fruit along with citrus, white peach, and yeasty bread.
The Divining Rod 2010 Chardonnay is a great wine with pasta, shrimp, basil, and feta or other simple Italian cuisine and offers all the qualities of an affordable chard that you want. It hits the spot. Simple and straight forward. With dinner that night, it was great paired with a Caesar salad with a little grilled shrimp as well as grilled lobster.
On the third night, there was just enough for a small glass when I came home from teaching. The wine was still good but definitely best the first night. If I had pumped it, it would have been better the third night. My bad because I really liked this wine. In fact,I told the woman at Vons that if any one asked, she should recommend it to them!
Divining Rod Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 from the Alexander Valley definitely smells like a cab with plentiful notes of cherry, plums, oak, cedar, and fresh leather. Lot of oak on the palate as well as fruitiness. Youthful, it’s still a little tannic, and it tasted well over the next two days. It was great with pizza we cooked on the grill with spicy sausage (see the photo!) and stands up really well to a blue cheese. It’s a bit hot, even though it says it’s only 13.5% alcohol. Seems like it would stand up to a seared pepper steak–and we’d definitely put some blue cheese on a steak with it. The RS is .o8%.
Both wines have real cork closures and contain from 1%-7% magic.
With the sample, they sent us divining rods and instructions, temporary tattoos, a flip book, a fun “I’m a Witch” button, and we had a great time trying to divine out. We look forward to doing more divining! In the meantime, I definitely recommend the chardonnay and the red wine drinkers in the crowd would recommend the Cab.
