Root: 1’s GEA sustainable bag in box of Cab Sauv and Pais Pairs Well with Outdoor Adventures

GEA Root 1 Aspens by Alley

Last week, we looked at wines in the can for picnics. Now we have another alternative to heavy, breakable bottles for wine: bag in the box, a topic we have not explored for quite awhile! With their portability, not only are wines in a box great for gatherings and outdoor occasions, they are much more sustainable: they stay tasty and fresh for weeks. AND they are much better for the planet. How could this be true? Wine in a bag in a box does not allow the wine to go “bad”– and wine in a bag does not weigh as much as glass making it less taxing on the earth in terms of shipping.  Root: 1’s GEA is sustainable in other ways too: it’s Chile’s first certified sustainable winery. We recently sampled Root: 1’s GEA, taking it on a camping trip to the east side of the Sierra near Yosemite National Park (pictured).

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and País, Chile’s ancestral grape, we found GEA to be a versatile and food-friendly wine on our camping trip, back home, and this weekend at the Live Oak Music Festival in San Luis Obispo!

Color: Medium plus density, ruby, violet rim,

Aroma: Very spicy nose, cherry and plum, dark stone fruit, raspberry, black pepper, mint, cigar box, the nose opens up nicely, very inviting,

Palate: Easy drinking, pleasant cherry fruit, dry but not drying, low tannins, silt, not very complex, simple finish, Marshal stated that it was very nice to just enjoy. It is sometimes nice to relax with a glass of wine and not have to think about it. Light in body, nimble on the palate,

Pairing: Great with the rib eye steak, nice with the blue cheese, think burgers with blue cheese. Worked well with the grilled zucchini.

And it pairs well with outdoor adventures too! (Yes that’s our VW van and we hiked to that Gardisky Lake!)
